Review: This book makes the case for the application of control ideas in the design of numerical algorithms. It provides a control perspective on problems mainly in numerical analysis, optimization, and matrix theory in which systems and control ideas are shown to play an important part. The objective is to present these lesser-known applications of control theory and disseminate control ideas to numerical analysts in order to encourage interaction between control and numerical analysis. There are chapters on: control and standard iterative methods for solving nonlinear equations; optimal and variable structure control in designing and evaluating iterative methods for finding zeros of nonlinear functions; neural networks; and control aspects of the numerical solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations.
