In June 2003 a feature was published in Nature magazine about the author and the tortoise called George. George is one of the most famous reptiles alive, having survived extinction on the Galapagos Islands and thought to be the last remaining Pinta tortoise in the world. Despite extensive attempts to find a mate for George, he has failed to breed and therefore allow his species to continue. This book is an extension of the original Nature article which considers Lonesome George’s case. It also explores the efforts of conservationists to preserve the Galapagos’ biodiversity and also how their experiences are echoed throughout the world. |
