Radar is currently evolving from a system that detects and tracks targets, to one that provides imaging and recognition capabilities. This book provides an introduction to radar target recognition for non-specialists who need to understand the topic in the course of their professional work. A tutorial on radar is included. Techniques used for recognizing ground, naval, airborne and ballistic missile targets (including high-resolution range profiling, SAR, ISAR, JEM, heicopter blade flash and HERM) are presented. The operational needs for the development of radar target recognition for both military and civil systems are covered. Issues associated with radar systems and component designs that are required to support target recognition, and the integration of these functions with conventional radar modes are discussed. Radar systems that use dish antennae and phase arrays are included. Techniques for assembling databases of target characteristics are described and methods of classification for recognizing targets from the measured radar data and from other available information are given. |
