Since |Barry’s The Construction of Buildings was published in 1958 there have been extensive changes in the technologies used and the building regulations. The original five volumes have now been updated and republished as two volumes. This, the second volume, for second-year architecture and construction students, deals with larger scale buildings, primarily residential, commercial and industrial buildings constructed with load bearing frames. One of the largest changes since 1958 has been the growth of pre-fabricated and off-site assembly. With information communication technologies, computer-facilitated manufacturing and lean production techniques emphasis has shifted towards the controlled environment of the factory and a whole new chapter has been added. The move towards more sustainable construction techniques is also reflected upon. |
