Review: On June 16th, 1963, Vostok 6 was launched into orbit, piloted, for the first time in history, by a woman, Communist Comrade Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova. This book follows the history of women and their association with space, from ancient women astronomers, through early aviation pioneers to the space shuttlenauts. The book describes the flights of many such women, such as Svetlana Savitaskaya and Sally Ride, who were, respectively, the first Soviet (1982) and American (1983) women to walk in space. Stations have now been built in space, the latest being the ISS, with Peggy Whitsun being the last woman to take up a long-duration mission as the first ISS Science Officer in 2002. Two women were lost with Columbia in January 2003. This book celebrates the achievements and lives of women involved in space exploration, not only those who have actually travelled in space, but also those on the ground.
