Review: This book provides practical guidance on deep sky observing in dark sky conditions, explaining how image intensifiers and video cameras can enhance the experience and describing what you can hope to observe. The ability of an image intensifier to resolve deep sky objects depends on the difference in contrast of between the sky and the object, which is greater if the sky is dark. The author first describes the new tools that are available to the amateur astronomer – image intensifiers, video devices, and how to combine both. He goes on to look at what qualifies as a dark sky (with sites in the US) and what you need to take for observing in the field. With only moderate apertures you can expect to view detail and actual spiral structures in many galaxies with relative ease. The major part of the book describes deep space objects (with photographs): from the Milky Way to galaxies beyond that you may observe. This book complements Visual Astronomy in the Suburbs, which deals with observations made under more challenging conditions.
