Review: This book presents the general principles of medical imaging with as few mathematical descriptions as possible; however, tomographic reconstruction needs to be explained in terms of the central slice theorem from Fourier analysis and the book necessarily addresses this. The book begins with a layout guide and a helpful glossary of units and common terms. Two early chapters provide a science background for medical students. Later chapters cover modern X-ray radiography, CT, SPECT, PET and MRI. Diagnostic ultrasound imaging is also included even though it is not part of the main theme of the book. The last chapter, on imaging in clinical practice, is mainly written for medical scientists. Each chapter highlights the key points and includes a list of questions and problems. Two appendices provide more detailed information on Fourier image reconstruction and the mathematics of NMR.
