The main objective of this report is to discuss disposal options for disused radioactive sources, ranging from conventional near-surface and rock-cavity facilities to geological repositories, including emplacements in shafts and boreholes drilled from the surface. The sources under discussion are sealed and, in general, small (typically a few centimetres in size) and may have been used in medical, research and education, or industrial applications. The aim is to identify suitable disposal strategies for the various radioactive sources and to illustrate a rational approach that would allow sensible decisions to be made concerning their disposal. The report highlights the use of boreholes and shaft-types repositories as a possible disposal option, in particular for countries that have limited resources and are seeking a simple, safe and cost-effective solution for the disposal of radioactive sources. |
