Review: Groundwater remediation as a whole is a relatively new field of study. The use of granular iron, in a permeable reactive barrier configuration, for the removal of chlorinated organic contaminants, was first proposed in the 1990s, when it was greeted with scepticism. However, currently more than 100 such PRBs containing granular iron have been installed, and perhaps an equal number containing other media have been installed for removing other contaminants. PRB technologies have gained global interest and acceptance. The 19 papers in this volume include discussions on: various types of reactants for different contaminants; configurations and reactants that are suitable for mixed contaminant plumes; emplacement alternatives and long-term performances.
