This, the first of two books by the author, concentrates on the database architecture and how the database itself works. It covers database architecture in depth: the files, memory structures, and processes that make up an Oracle database. It discusses important topics such as locking, concurrency controls, how transactions work, and redo and undo, and why they are important. Finally, it examines the physical structures in the databases, such as tables, indexes and datatypes, including techniques for making optimal use of them. There are lots of examples and lots of code. The accompanying CD includes a searchable pdf of Expert One-to-One Oracle as well as new material and 8i-specific details. |
