Review: This book investigates the nature and propagation of errors that are built into the mathematical fabric of software, and describes how to overcome them. The book is divided into three parts. The first, Pitfalls in numerical calculation, illustrates some of the difficulties incurred in introducing robust and reliable scientific software, and reviews some of the well-known failures. The second part, Diagnostic tools, describes the tools that can be used to assess the accuracy and reliability of existing scientific applications. Finally, Technology for improving accuracy and reliability, looks at a variety of techniques that can be used to improve the accuracy and reliability of newly-developed scientific applications – in particular, the choice of programming language, underlying hardware, and the parallel computing environment.
