Review: Most of the Earth’s snow and ice is located in remote places, so observational techniques of remote sensing from the air, and especially from satellites, are especially useful for gathering data about the cryosphere. This reference book provides an introduction to this remote sensing, explaining why cryospheric observations are important and why remote sensing observations are needed. It also gives an outline of remote sensing methods and techniques. In particular it covers the essential physical properties of snow and ice, giving a survey of the existing techniques, as well as those that are currently being developed. Snow cover, ‘land ice’ (glaciers, ice sheets and ice shelves), sea, river and lake ice, and icebergs are all discussed.
