Review: This book presents a broad cross-section of dynamic programming (DP) techniques applied to the optimisation of dynamical systems based on the results of more than ten years of the authors’ research and development at Sandia National Laboratories. The researchers primary goal was to develop a robust path planning/trajectory optimisation tool that didn’t require a guess. This was partly achieved by a combination of DP and homotopy algorithms. The theoretical development of the DP algorithms is included here with an emphasis on their application to practical problems. The DP algorithms have also been successfully applied to a variety of engineering problems and their case studies are given, these include rigid, flexible, and redundant robots; rigid and flexible spacecraft; autonomous rocker guidance and control; and rotary crane systems.
