Review: This book presents an overview of techniques of crystallization of soluble proteins or membrane proteins on lipid monolayers and subsequent electron microscope imaging of the two-dimensional crystalline arrays to reveal their structure. Early chapters of the book describe adsorption onto lipid monolayers, the crystallization process and methods for monitoring surface crystallization; later chapters describe electron microscopic observations and image analysis, the practical considerations of 2D crystallization, and new methods using DNA scaffolds and lipid nanotubes. A useful appendix lists all the proteins that have been crystallized on planar lipid films.
