Review: The first English-language edition of this practical reference book was published 20 years ago and the greatly expanded text of the new edition reflects more recent knowledge of plant toxins and their effects. The plants discussed are mainly relevant to central Europe, but plants from other geographical regions are also considered and there is a new appendix of toxicologically important North American plants. The first two chapters of the book discuss the problems that arise from poisoning by plants and toxicologically significant plant constituents; the main section presents the most important poisonous plants arranged alphabetically in families. This is a beautifully illustrated book with very many actual-size full-colour plates and black-and-white microscope images, as well as diagrams that show the molecular structure of plant poisons.
