Modern biotechnological inventions raise previously unknown or little-known concerns of a moral nature. The US and European patent laws have differing approaches to patenting such inventions. This book outlines the debate concerning the problems, in particular, moral-related ones, associated with modern biotechnology, and it examines the controversy surrounding the role of patent law in biotechnological inventions. The origin, policy and legislative history of patent law both in the USA and member countries of the EU is examined, with particular reference to the provisions relating to morality. The author describes specific cases and elucidates the moral concerns associated with modern biotechnology. |
