‘Sustainable development’ has been described as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. About 1/3 of the world’s population relies on the use of animal power and non-commercial fuels. 1.7 billion people have no access to electricity. Developing countries are making a transition from being agricultural to industrial countries. To achieve sustainable economic development on a global scale will require the judicious use of resources, technology, appropriate economic incentives and strategic policy planning. This report provides a background, summary and guidelines for using a core set of Energy Indicators for Sustainable Development. The aim of these Indicators is to provide policymakers with information on their country’s current status concerning energy and economic sustainability, show what needs to be improved, and help in the decision-making on how these improvements could be achieved. |
