These are 30 papers from the 106 contributions to the European Meeting on Fire Retardancy and Protection of Materials, held in Lille in 2003. The focus of the meeting was mineral additives, and there are chapters on polymers using microsized additives, nanosized additives and hybrid composite materials. Microcomposites and nanocomposites have differing dispersions of the material in the composite. Nanocomposites are formed when only a small amount of organically modified aluminosilicate clay is added to the polymer; this small amount can give significant reduction in the peak heat intensity rate. The papers are divided into sections, with sections on: the use of fillers and nanocomposites; micro-sized retardant filers; the use of nanocomposite materials; micro-sizes fire retarding mineral fillers; mineral fillers in synergistic systems; and the effect of the addition of mineral fillers and additives on the toxicity of fire effluents from polymers. |
