Anthropogenic perturbation of the global carbon cycle has increased the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, and decreased the carbon pool in the world’s agricultural soils. The decline in soil quality is more severe in soils of the tropics than in the temperate regions. This book addresses six areas: the impact of the projected climate change on soil quality, water resources, temperature, and growing seasons; the changing soil carbon dynamics; the impact in changes in carbon dioxide on agronomical yields and food production; projected world food demands; issues of carbon trading; and R&D priorities for enhancing soil quality. |
