Review: The techniques used to optimise maintenance strategies are: reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS). This book explains the use of reliability techniques to save expense and ensure safety by identifying and reducing the risk of potential failures early in the design cycle. First the author defines reliability parameters and costs and outlines a cost-effective approach to quality, reliability and safety. He goes on to discuss how to interpret failure rate data and predict reliability and maintainability. The last part of the book gives the legal, management and safety considerations, laying out the UK legislation and the integrity of safety-related systems. Two Case studies illustrate the theory. The Appendices provide a glossary, Chi-square distributions, microelectronic failure rates, failure mode percentages human error rates, and fatality rates.
