This volume focuses on housing in Britain in the 21st century, with an increased urban population demanding homes, and an emphasis on climate change and the need to cut greenhouse emissions. These issues put a strain on available resources and lead to a need for high-density developments on urban sites. The author looks at the allocation of space in high-density dwellings, the need for services and facilities to sustain a neighbourhood, and at the various forms of urban housing – terraces, flats and maisonettes. Conservation factors, such as the reuse of buildings and a minimum use of scarce resources, are covered, as is the design quality of the housing. The second part of the book gives case studies of developments built in Britain in the last few years. They illustrate a range of issues such as: housing types; development processes; user groups; forms of tenure; and construction methods and materials. |
