Review: In 1992 the American Statistical Association started a section on Statistics in Sport. The section aims to promote high standards in the application of statistics to sport and to foster statistical education in sports. This volume comprises papers that best represent the research of statisticians into sports. It is organised into major spectator sports: football, baseball, basketball and ice-hockey; less popular sports: golf, soccer, and track and field; and more general approaches to sports. The papers are also of varying technical levels. They have all appeared in Chance, The Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA), The American Statistician (TAS), and the Proceedings of the Statistics in Sports Section of the American Statistical Association. Some of the methods are inferential and are relevant to answering statistical questions relating to sport. Other methods include: the prediction of sporting events; highs and lows in athletes’ performances, the probability of victory, learning from select data, rating players or teams, unusual outcomes, the rules of sports, game strategy, statistical methodology in sports, modelling team competition, and the use of the research papers in teaching statistics.
