This book presents a global and local perspective on the nature of sustainable development, and the crucial role that transport plays in making or breaking cities. The authors also put forward a range of available options, relating to the cost of travel, restricting car-use in urban areas and designing cities for people, as well as pushing hard on new technologies, together with a commentary on the barriers to their implementation and explanations as to why outcomes do not often match up to expectations. The author reflects on the opportunity that there is for a fundamental shift in thinking about future transport policy; to take this opportunity transport needs to be placed at the centre of sustainable urban development. |
