Review: The first part of the Mir complex was launched in 1986. After several false starts it was continuously inhabited for a few days short of a decade, with one cosmonaut – a doctor – spending 14 months on board, studying his own adaptation to weightlessness and, in the process, showing that someone could live in that state for the length of time that would be required to fly to Mars. This book tells the story of the space station from its beginning to its de-orbiting in 2001. Born in the Cold War era, it can be said that Mir’s ultimate achievement is that bought the USA and USSR together to cooperate in space.
