Review: This graduate textbook describes the basic theory of finite difference schemes applied to the numerical solution of partial differential equations. It provides the necessary material for scientific computation with finite difference schemes and presents the basic theory for understanding these methods. The first part of the book presents the material on time dependent equations in a unified way, using Fourier analysis, for students to use in scientific and engineering studies. This is followed by an introduction to elliptic partial differential equations.
