Continuum physics describes the world on a macroscopic scale. This is an introductory undergraduate textbook to the basic ideas and the derivation of the equations of continuum mechanics from Newtonian particle physics. It is divided into five parts: introduction, hydrostatics, deformable solids, basic fluid mechanics and special topics in fluid mechanics. Although many examples are taken from geophysics and astrophysics, the emphasis is on generic methods and applications. Each chapter begins with a simple introduction and goes on to become progressively more difficult. There are problems (with answers) at the end of each chapter |
