This textbook aims to show that the concept of functional quality can be made measurable and can be expressed in concrete terms, with particular reference to the design of buildings. It begins by a description of the functions performed by buildings and gives a brief history of architecture. It goes on to look at how the different schools of thought deal with the relationship between function and form and discusses how the desired function quality can be put into a brief for the design. It goes on to evaluate buildings to test whether the desired quality of use has been met. The last chapter looks at the criteria for examining designs, dividing functional quality into nine aspects, and discussing the criteria that are available to examine designs and completed buildings for functionality. |
