This book explores the current and potential renewable forms of energy in the context of world production and the use of energy and discusses the technological barriers to their introduction. The preparation of ‘clean fuels’ from fossil fuels, the use of electrical energy and generation, and renewable energy (that generates heat or electricity) are all covered. Chapters are devoted to energy storage as electricity as well as thermal, potential, kinetic, electrostatic and electromagnetic forms. An alternative way of storing energy is as a chemical, such as hydrogen or methanol, that can be re-converted to heat or electricity. Hydrogen has been seen as the ‘ultimate’ fuel for the future and the ‘Hydrogen Economy’ is discussed. The final chapters look at the use of stored energy for electrical propulsion and the future for energy supply and consumption over the next twenty years. |
