This generously illustrated book gives a detailed account of an attempt to identify the skulls of 18 family members of the Slovenian Counts of Celje who died in the 14th and 15th centuries. Early chapters provide information on the turbulent history of this powerful family; these are followed by chapters on the many multidisciplinary methods used for determining the sex and age of the skulls, together with the diseases these individuals suffered from and the family linkages. Art history methods for reconstructing soft facial parts are also described. The combination of these different approaches have resulted in identification of all 18 skulls and also enabled an artist to create portrait representations for three members of this family. |
