This is a study of talk-in-interaction among aircraft pilots in the cockpit. The author made audio and video recordings of such in-flight interactions of pilots of commercial aircraft. The book considers pilots’ routine talk-in-interaction as they establish what is going on around them: who knows what; who is doing what; and what they are to do next. It explores how pilots develop and convey their situation and moment-to-moment understandings to one another and work together as a flight crew. The three Parts of the book cover: how variations in airline pilot’s choice of personal pronouns language contributes to evolving understandings; coordinating talk and non-talk activities; and integrating talk-in-interaction within and beyond the cockpit. |
