Review: This approachable introduction to statistics looks at chance events in our every day lives in an informal way. Lotteries and casino games are carefully discussed with worked examples to illustrate the basis and ideas of probability theory. The author begins by introducing the basic concepts of probability theory by using motivating examples, and goes on to provide a more mathematical explanation for readers who are interested. He includes the theories of: the law of large numbers, betting systems, random walks, the bootstrap, rare events, the central limit theorem, the multivariate normal distribution, the Bayesian approach, and generating functions and examples of betting systems such as those for casinos and lotteries and the famous 1971 Monty Hall dilemma where game show contestants have the choice of three boxes.
