Review: This introductory text describes acoustic, optical and magnetic modes that propagate at the surface of a solid or a liquid. These types of mode have a great deal in common, e.g. they are often characterized by an amplitude that decays exponentially with distance from the surface. This new edition still provides a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic properties of surfaces, superlattices and related structures, but has been updated to include advances that have been made since the last edition in 1988. These include some of the unforeseen effects that have been found, such as the oscillatory exchange underlying magnetoresisteance in metallic multilayers. The growth of nanotechnology has led to many exciting advances, including the fabrication and study of high-frequency devices with lengths in the order of sub-micrometres. The study of superlattices is now more comprehensive, and more space is given to them. The nonlinear properties of surfaces, interfaces and superlattices are also given an expanded treatment.
