Review: The origins of this book are the author’s writings in the Journal of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry. John Feltzer believes that to be a good scientist one needs more than just good technical knowledge and research skills. Communications and interpersonal skills, as well as personal traits, are often important. He explains how to achieve in technical area by keeping on learning; being part of a scientific community; writing and reviewing for journals; diversifying etc. Then he turns his attention to nontechnical areas, such as writing a paper, listening, mentoring, ethics, and teams and leadership. The last part of the book deals with career changes: industry vs. academia, supervising and managing, and the pursuit of non-traditional careers in chemistry.
