Review: This book is intended to help designers to understand the issues involved in producing energy-efficient and sustainable building design. First the authors provide a background to the factors that have to be taken into account, such as occupant comfort and building design of windows, ventilation, lighting etc. Then they look at simple methods that can be used to produce an energy- and space-efficient building for the mechanical services, i.e. site analysis, building form, thermal insulation, thermal mass, plant room space, and distribution space. The elements to be considered at the design stage are outlined. Finally, some case studies from buildings in the UK, Germany, France and Switzerland are given to show how energy-efficient buildings can be completed within a strict budget.
