‘Photonics’ encompasses optics-based devices, components and systems for information technology. Long-haul telecommunications systems are almost entirely based on the transmission of short bursts or pulses of laser light along silica optical fibres with Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers inserted periodically to regenerate the signals. These are the Proceedings of the summer school held in Scotland in September 2002. The 14 chapters are based on lectures given at the school. They include: ultrafast digital processing; short pulse generation using semiconductor lasers; measuring ultrafast laser pulses; planar photonic crystal microcircuit elements; polymer lasers and amplifiers; and localized waves in femtosecond optics. |
