The access network, or local loop, is a vital consideration for any network engineer, the cost of the access network being typically some eighty per cent of the overall telecommunications networks. This book introduces new access technologies that are currently beginning to be used. The authors, many of them associated with BT’s development facilities, all have extensive experience in the field. The book begins with an introduction to access networks and an overview of the major new technologies. It goes on to examine the trends for broadband and narrowband applications, giving some indications of the bandwidths that are required. A number of aspects of copper technologies, including ADSL and VDSL as well as ‘local loop unbundling’ and ‘frequency planning’, are looked at in detail. There are also chapters on optical fibre technologies, cable technologies, and radio technologies – from wireless LANs and fixed radio technologies through to satellite and UTMS systems. The last chapter discusses management of the access network, based on TMN architecture, and presents many of the issues concerned with network management of broadband access. |
