Accident analysis is an important tool for confirming the adequacy and efficacy of provisions within the defence in depth concept for the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs). The analysis needs to be consistent, complete, and of good quality. This safety report, based on good practice worldwide, aims to provide practical guidance for performing accident analysis for NPPs with pressurized water reactors (PWRs), taking into account the specific features of these reactors. This safety report contains a detailed list of initiating events with their direct causes and an overview of the safety aspects of the event leading to potential degradation of the barriers against release of the radioactive material. Licensing type safety analyses, aimed at demonstrating sufficient safety margins, are manly addressed. Suggestions on the selection of acceptance criteria as well as initial conditions and boundary conditions are provided. Specific methodological conditions and boundary conditions on how to perform the analysis of individual events are given. |
