The destructive effect of air pollution on the built environment has long been apparent. This book looks at the mechanisms of air pollution and the materials that are likely to be damaged by it. It begins by looking at the history of damage to the built environment as a result of climate change, and the different causes and levels of air pollution throughout the ages. It goes on to look at specific building materials: stone and natural rock; brick, concrete and mortar; metals; glass; and polymeric materials. There are also chapters on: the sources and effects of salt in building materials; the effect of organic pollutants on microorganisms; the soiling of buildings by particulates; and patterns of degradation in a building. |
