Review: Urban atmospheric pollution leads to increased weathering of the stone of historic buildings and monuments. Research by geomorphologists, geologists and chemists, who have experience of the weathering of natural rock outcrops, is now being applied to the built environment. This is the third volume in a series on land reconstruction and management. It comprises papers from the conference held in Wolverhampton in May 1999. The authors examine the chemical and biological processes involved in the deterioration of stone in urban environments and provides appropriate field survey and modelling techniques so that the soiling and weathering off buildings can be monitored. Case studies illustrate a variety of current research techniques.
