Review: An engineering plastic is a synthetic polymer with mechanical properties that enable its use in the form of a load-bearing shape. Polymers constitute the major portion of engineering plastic. Engineering plastics all have, as their principal constituent, one or more synthetic polymer resin and almost universally contain additives. This is a collection of ASM Handbook articles on how engineering plastics are characterized and understood in terms of properties and performance. The first section introduces the fundamental elements of engineering plastics and how composition, processing, and structure influence their properties and performance. The second section comprises articles on material selection and design, where the requirements of a plastic part are synthesized and analysed in terms of function, shape, process, and materials. The last two sections cover the important physical, chemical and mechanical properties of plastics, and failure analysis.
