Review: The new biotechnologies that have been developed in the last thirty years have made rapid advances in gene transfer and produced novel plant varieties with genes from inside and outside the plant kingdom; many more transgenic crops are currently being engineered. Plant issue culture, a basic technique of plant technology, has found a variety of applications as a laboratory technique for the study of plant growth and development and the manipulation of these processes. Plant cell cultures are now being used as in vitro factories for the commercial production of pharmaceutical products. A notable achievement has been the development of bacterial genes in plant cells for antibiotics, heralding the production of easily-administered oral vaccines. These developments are presented in these sixteen lectures given at the conference held in Singapore in December 2000.
