Review: These are the 360 papers presented at the conference on structural and construction engineering, which was held in Rome in September 2003. The theme embraced three topics: systemic framework (the capacity to survey all aspects and connections of any problem and its solution); creative work (the challenge of developing something new); and design (methods of improving the world and making it better). The current practice and research in structural and construction engineering is characterised by increasing levels of complexity and interaction. The main objective of the conference was to define the knowledge and technologies that are needed to design and develop project processes and to produce high-quality, competitive, environment- and consumer-friendly structure and constructed facilities. This goal is allied with the development and reuse of quality materials, excellence in construction management, and reliable measurement and testing methods.
