Review: These are the proceedings of the conference held in Japan in March 2003. The conference’s aim was to discuss problems of ‘underground environment’. Geo-technology, applied to the underground environment, and environmental rock engineering both play and important role in this. The detailed modelling of geological structure and the precise evaluation of mechanical and hydrological properties of rock masses are needed to solve the environmental problems. The 40 papers and 15 poster papers were divided into the following topics: rock fracture; contamination and barrier; groundwater; underground measurement; rock stability, GIS and geostatistics; and seismic monitoring.
