This book is a summary of the chemistry and technology that has been accumulated to investigate what chemicals go into everyday preparations, how these chemicals function and some related aspects, such as environmental effects. It aims to fill the information gap between textbook chemistry and the applied chemistry of everyday chemical formulations. The chemical technology of surfactants and related chemicals are described, using over 40 examples of everyday products (shampoo, dishwashing liquids, oven cleaner, rust remover etc.). The manufacture, the main chemicals used and the use of resources and inevitable pollution in the manufacturing process are all discussed. |
