Review: This book looks at the applications and manipulation of optical near-field and surface plasmons. It is divided into two parts. The first part describes ‘super-RENS’ (super-resolution near-field structure), which is a method of overcoming several problems in optical near-field data storage. This part discusses optical data storage and its related new technologies, including the special properties of thin films in dynamic conditions. Super-RENS has the potential to enable optical near-field recording that is free from high-speed nanometre flight of a near-field optical head. The second part of the book addresses the basic concept behind manipulating surface plasmons. It contains individual approaches and characteristics in surface plasmons and localised surface plasmons.
