These are the invited papers from a Colloquium in honour of Prof. John Spence, held in Strathclyde in May 2003. It covered topics ranging from detailed fracture mechanics to overall vessel and piping design, taking in the best of current thinking in the field. They give guidance on important topics, such as limit loads on both cracked and uncracked components, elastic and plastic buckling, assessment of integrity in flawed welds, specialized shakedown considerations, nonlinear side effects, fatigue methodologies, and explosive loading. The papers are divided into six sections: piping and finite-element analysis; saddles plastic collapse loads; vessel ends and eccentric loads; containment vessels; explosive loading; and welding and fatigue. |
