Review: This book is based on a one-semester course that was given at MIT by the author. It focuses on basic ideas: the characterization of transportation systems; defining the components of transportation systems; and introducing the ideas of transportation networks. Through a simple example of a system of elevators, the author establishes 30 key points that are essential to understand to attain a broad grasp of transportation system performance. He also introduces the idea of models and frameworks as useful abstractions of transportation systems that can be used to perform transport analysis and design. The book comprises three parts: Part I gives a basic introduction to transportation systems, the context within which they operator, and a characterization of their behaviour. Part II deals with freight transportation, and Part II deals with passenger transportation.
