More than 80 per cent of the world’s crops cannot be irrigated. This book takes an integrated approach to the management of crops in drought-prone areas, beginning with socio-economic considerations and progressing to agronomic and genetic solutions. In particular, there are chapters on the progress in the production of legumes (groundnuts, chickpeas, pigeonpeas, lentils and faba beans). They look at the conditions under which the crop is to be grown, the traits needed for the plants to withstand them and genetic breeding programmes to obtain the best strains of plants. |
