Nuclear facilities around the world are being shut down for a variety of reasons. One of the decommissioning options available is to put the facility into long-term storage prior to dismantling for a period of time ranging from months to over 50 years. This report gives information on the safety concerns that may arise and suggests ways of anticipating them. It aims to ensure that a nuclear installation that is awaiting decommission is placed in a safe, long-term storage mode. It also aims to help Member States to prepare decommissioning plans for both active and inactive facilities where they need to be kept in long-term storage. |
