This textbook provides a sound introduction to the mechanical properties of materials for undergraduate and graduate students. It covers the essential principles required to understand and interpret the mechanical properties of different types of materials, such as metals, ceramics, intermetallics, polymers and composites. The fundamentals of elasticity and plasticity are explained. Strengthening methods, such as dislocation strengthening methods and the use of composites are discussed. The basics of fracture mechanics is presented and a description of the effects of fatigue and the environment is given. The author concludes with a look at time-dependent viscoelatic/visco-plastic behaviour, creep, and creep crack growth phenomena. |
